NOW YOU KNOW: YOU’RE PREGNANT

WHAT IS YOUR PREFERENCE

If it is your first time, you have many questions, one is typically what type of obstetric treatment will I choose: Public or Private?

For women who have a preference for private obstetric care and have Private Health insurance, they need to understand the various Private Obstetric Care Offerings available in Brisbane.

WHAT DOES PRIVATE HEALTH COVER?

For Birth-Related Services, your insurance will cover

  • your hospital stay and

  • any medical interventions that you may need.

On top, however, there is an out of pocket fee for your private obstetrician which varies between obstetricians (usually between $3000 and $5000).

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF PRIVATE OBSTETRIC CARE?

Besides the more notable benefits such as:

  • Choice of Obstetrician,

  • Choice of Hospital

  • Choice of Care Plan

The single greatest advantage is the “Continuity of Care” offered by some private obstetricians in Brisbane.

WHY CONTINUITY OF CARE IS IMPORTANT

Continuity of Care is significant from both a personal and health standpoint. You deal with the same obstetrician for your whole journey, including

  • The initial consultation

  • Regular check-ups during your pregnancy,

  • As well as Ante Natal Visits, and

  • Importantly, your obstetrician is present at the time of birth

Your Obstetrician should be familiar with your history and fully aware of any of your personal preferences, such as pain management.

OTHER PRIVATE OBSTETRIC ADVANTAGES

Under Private Care, you enjoy more control.

  • Your preference for an elective caesarean section without medical indications is available.

  • You are guaranteed a private room, where your partner may be able to stay too. Further, you can stay longer in your room to recover and gain breastfeeding support.

In the public system, these preferences are not available. You have less control of your delivery and you typically share a room with other mothers and their babies.

ENSURE YOU GET FULL PRIVATE OBSTETRIC CARE

Some private Obstetric groups referred to their service as "private share groups” where you might be seeing a different doctor or midwife on your antenatal visits and also at the time of your delivery.

This ‘team approach’ is not full Continuity of Care.

DR ALEXANDER’S FULL OBSTETRIC CARE

Dr Alexander is a solo obstetrician and gynaecologist offering private (one to one) care for pregnant women throughout their pregnancy and delivery.

The discussion about your care and delivery happens throughout your antenatal period and Dr Alexander listens and discusses all aspects of your pregnancy and addresses any concerns.

Over the past 17 years, Dr Alexander has been present at 97% of all his patient’s deliveries.

For the few exceptions when Dr Alexander was involved in another emergency, he has relied on other senior obstetricians that share the same principle and values in obstetric practice. This ensures that you are in safe hands.
